The concept is good, the art is trippy, the music selection is cool, but is unplayable, and in multiple ways.Just minutes after purchasing was suffering of random crashes in the middle of a cutscene or song while playing and had to do multiple restarts of the app. Not to mention, the game has a really off timing. Yeah, sure, you can get "used to it" but it doesn't feel fair and no other quality rhythm game out there forces you to play like that, hell, I'd be better playing without any audio!As a seasoned veteran in all things DDR, PIU, beatmania, Guitar Hero and stuff, this was really a dissapointment, most of all coming from cool guys like Zen Studios, who I love for they pinball games. Next time, better put a sync button on the options or something, don't force people to play your way, make the game fluid, like it should. For now, it's an unplayable disaster and you would have much more fun playing Stepmania for free on your PC.Enjoy the money Zen, you don't deserve it.. I really liked the game by the first sight. I really wanted to like it even after I bought it and played a few fights. But I can't...KickBeat is a quite good-looking mixture of rhythm and beat'em up genres. In fact, even now, at the very beginning of the year 2019, you can't call rhythm\/beat'em up mix project with better visuals, than we had in KickBeat in 2015. However... it's not so well both in rhythm and kicking butts.There goes my downvote:- first of all, let's talk about music. The game holds 24 tracks: some electromusic, some new wave rock and some rap. The player can add other music into freeplay, but have to unlock that option first. And no, you can't skip the tracks, mix them, line them in another order or anything. You have to beat them right one after another, even if you don't like the particular vibe... Get me right: some of the tracks of this game is in my own personal playlist. However, I, for instance, can't really stand the dubstep. While someone else wouldn't like some rock music track - the game cares not about it.- so yeah, no matter how do you like the one particular song, you have to cut through it, and there goes another trouble: the rhythm don't actually fits! The main 24 tracks, with the various amount of enemies depending from the difficulty, supposed to be right in time with the tunes. But they are not! If you'll try to follow the music and do some action based on the tune, like in some other rhythm games - you'll be squared quite quickly! So you actually need to follow the visuals, while the sound goes after that. You may not notice the problem on the first few levels on the normal difficulty... but farther you go, more obvious that problem with non-sync tunes will be. And yeah, of course, if the devs couldn't made the proper timings with the given tracks, guess how well the game will treat the downloaded tracks? Yeah, far from perfect, to say the least.- the visuals. I said they are good, and they are. But, every song is 2-4 minutes long, that means 120-240 enemies per level (sometimes more), and the moves we gonna perform are quite limited. 4 kicks, and about 20 variations of it, and that's all. You'll see them all in one level 4-5 times at least, and be bored about them 4-5 tracks after. With the rise of difficulty and number of enemies on the level, you'll be quite bored by constant dissemination of those enemies, to the point of actual harm to the eyesight.- You can't follow the rhythm, and the visuals aren't clear with what to expect next... but even more in addition to illogical and confusing solutions goes for the bonuses! Some enemies on the level will be carrying some surplus which you're supposed to catch by hitting the same button after the kick for a second time. Believe me, it is really knocks the pace of the game even more.I think that's enough by now to make a conclusion: KickBeat is a rhythm game without rhythm and fighting game without actual feeling of the fight, since you can't call the shots and only performing super-long QTE all game long. Without any proper reward. Therefore, my mark is 5\/10 (and it's that high only thanks to visuals and Some of the music in the game). Beats don't really match too well with the game. The song is more of a guideline but is deceptive on when you should actually hit the beat.. KickBeat is something I found in a steam discussion sharing games that could be music driven, as it was currently 80% off; I had to give it a try!The first thing that is worth noting is that this game seems primarily a single player campaign game with a set playlist of songs, which chapter by chapter go through a story. I was only interested in this game for the additional feature of being able to import your own local music files once you have gotten past the first chapter of the campaign (which is the first four levels). For that reason, this review will be a little partial. I can\u2019t say that I\u2019m giving this a full review, as I basically played an extra feature, and not the main game.With that said, the part of the campaign that I did play was fun. You play as a young martial artist, who is trying to protect \u201cthe sphere\u201d, the magical entity of which all music is held, from the bad guys. You smack up your enemies to the beat of music, and the tracks seemed fast-paced but varied.It also seemed as if this game had a comedic element to it. It actually seems fun, and maybe at some point I\u2019ll play through the campaign entirely.The part I actually wanted to play though, the \u201cbeat your music\u201d feature, was actually quite interesting. As far as the genre goes, this is something a bit different. I was hoping you didn\u2019t have to get too far in the campaign to unlock the feature, and you didn\u2019t, which was good. The four levels you need to play to unlock it acted as a decent practice time to get used to the game.You direct the game to your locally stored music files, and it comes up with a little interface which helps create your custom level. At first glance I was a little worried, as it asks you for the beats per minute and the beat start for your song. That\u2019s not something I imagine people generally know, so I worried it was going to be a problem.Thankfully, there is an option to start the \u201cBPM calculator\u201d. The game will play you sections of the song, and you can tap the beat in to help it get an idea of how to calculate the song. I did it several times, with various different types of songs, and it seemed to work pretty well for me.I tried both tapping the beat of the bass line, and tapping along to the vocals, and both seemed to come out with decent levels. Once the level is created, it\u2019s stored and you can play it whenever you like. If you mess up the rhythm, and it\u2019s a little off, you can even go back and edit already made songs, to try and fine tune the level.Once your level is made, you can choose your difficulty, and customise your environment, character and outfit assumingly to ones you have unlocked.As a music driven game, it\u2019s pretty alright. I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s the best, but it\u2019s definitely a bit different and a bit of fun. Of course, it\u2019s not meant to be a music driven game, so it\u2019s understandable that this \u201cadditional feature\u201d is only alright.The main game is where the attraction is, and it seems like a fun game.All in all I think it\u2019s worth a go! If you\u2019re only into the music driven bit like I am, definitely buy this when it\u2019s on sale. Otherwise, if you think the main campaign looks like something you\u2019d play, straight up give it a go. It\u2019s a fun little rhythm game with a martial arts and music based story line and a quirky humour.TL;DR : I played it for the \u201cbeat your music\u201d additional feature, which is fun, but you should really be buying it for the main game which is a single player story campaign. Zen Studios, the developers and publishers of KickBeat, had developed only CastleStorm and Pinball FX2 and its numerous addons before they gave the world this somewhat special game. That raises some questions but without further ado... In the red corner - a beat 'em up. In the blue corner - a (music) rhythm game. Let's fight!Using either W-A-S-D (and some other keys for powerups) or a Xbox 360 controller, you're controlling one of two useable characters and the goal is to finish the songs as you're fighting waves of enemies who would like to beat you down to the ground. Most music in the game consists of rock and metal - examples: Celldweller, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and Blue Stahli - with some additional tracks from rap and electronic artists, BUT the good thing is that you can just add tracks from your own computer and voila, endless replayability.The gameplay while being somewhat repetetive at times is kept alive by the music being played in the levels. There's three different enemy types, the different types have their own attack patterns, and you've got powerups and four different levels of difficulity. The developers included three short tutorials which explains all the controls and so on and does it very good.Well, that's the gameplay... that's the sound... the controls... how about the graphics? Not that they are that important to a game in this "genre" (I don't think there's any other game like this out there... is there?) but they are acceptable. The models look decent, the cutscenes are kind off handdrawn so they look pretty good, nothing spectacular in any way.I had some fun with it, playing through the different songs, and I will probably return to it some day... and to anyone looking for a new rhythm game, I recommend this game to you.. Difficult to begin with but suddenly everything clicked into place and KickBeat became a mighty rhythm game.. if you've ever played with a hand-held game of Simon by milton bradley (and didn't rage afterwards), this game's for you.i like the concept of adding rhythm to the old MB idea but its required REACTION time to press buttons is TOO rigid.the slider on that built-in metronome doesn't allow you slack for syncopation either.remember, we're human beings, not machines... our timing is NOT digital --- this game should allow for a bit of syncopation like most modern karaoke console does for singers.i like it but I'm a bit torn.for now, as it is --- it's not worth $9... maybe $5.
